  1. Hi Weam,

Thanks for sharing your project. I taught one of these courses before and I experienced some of what you mentioned – that what writing looks like in these courses is completely different. I asked some people and they said they just have the students write on the exam so it counts and others have them do projects / papers. Curious, when you teach these type of courses how do you personally handle the writing requirement? And do you run into issues where students think “why am I writing this is a math class?”? How do you go about setting norms with regards to writing mathematics?

    Best,

    1. Hi Robert,
WIN courses are so popular nation wide and especially when I was teaching at Texas A& M system.
The structure of these courses are different from one university to another as I stated in my poster, but they all require revision of the work load.
I was teaching two different level classes as win courses:
Communication in Mathematics (Joiner 2000 level)
Complex variables ( Senior 4000 level)
They require in these courses to :
Write in LaTeX all their work which consist of :
      Working on a research project
      Write their Homework
      Write on ethics.
As you mentioned, they didn’t expect that much writing in math courses, but they were so happy to do something different.
Usually 60% of the grade on the writing component and 40% on other class grades as tests, Homework, and quizzes.
It was time consuming teaching these courses, and it is fun to work on different projects!
      Thank you for asking!
